Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): Early Genetic Testing

Introduction to CVS: Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is a prenatal test performed between 10 and 13 weeks of pregnancy to detect genetic abnormalities. It involves collecting a small sample of placental tissue for analysis.

Procedure: CVS can be done through the abdomen (transabdominal) or the cervix (transcervical), guided by ultrasound. The choice of method depends on the placenta's location and the patient's medical history.

Indications for CVS: CVS is recommended for women with abnormal first-trimester screening results, a family history of genetic disorders, or those seeking early diagnosis of conditions like Down syndrome, Tay-Sachs disease, and hemophilia.

Benefits and Risks: The main advantage is early detection of genetic disorders, allowing for timely decisions. Risks include a small chance of miscarriage, infection, and Rh sensitization, which should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Recovery and Results: Most women can resume normal activities within a day. Results are usually available within two weeks, and genetic counseling is offered to help interpret the findings and discuss the next steps.
